Training - University

University of Edinburgh
Many of the undergraduate programmes at Edinburgh University's School of Literatures Languages and Cultures include courses incorporating film studies. There are also three postgraduate courses for an MSc or PhD. They are theory courses rather than practical.

Exeter University
There are three degree-level courses and two PhD's that you can do at Exeter University and you can do a modern language with a BA for a combined honours. The courses offer both theory and practical work.

Leeds Metropolitan University
A number of courses, part and full time, for a variety of qualifications, many of them involving practical work. Leeds Metropolitan students work on short films, commercials, music promos and animation and image manipulation projects.

London Film School
Short and part time courses, with intensive, hands on experience. The main two are MA qualifications, but there are drawing and scriptwriting programmes. At 50-years-old, London Film School's is world's oldest international school for film techniques.

Metropolitan Film School
Lots of different courses, covering the practical side of film making, from writing and producing to acting and editing. Many are part time or for a few weeks, but the prices at the Metropolitan Film School could hurt your pocket.

Nottingham University
The film studies degree courses at Nottingham University's Institute of Film Studies are usually combined with a foreign language and are mainly theory based. There is an MA course which has more practical work.

Open University
You can study film theory as part of the Open University's general degree course. They also do American or British cinema as a postgraduate qualification. Facilities are available, including slide room, university film theatre and the arts faculty multimedia centre, but the teaching is through distance learning and you do not attend lectures.

Sheffield Hallam University
A range of courses, based around the history, criticism and theory of film, with some involving practical work. Students examine film from an economic, historical and artistic perspective. Sheffield Hallam University runs undergraduate and postgraduate courses, full and part time.

University of Southampton
On Southampton University's film studies progamme students cover a wide range of languages, countries and perspectives. There are practical units but the courses encourage analytical and critical skills. Through Wessex films student productions are regularly entered into competitions and screened at local cinemas.
